Ruud Gullit will not become assistant trainer of the Dutch national football squad after all, the KNVB said on Friday.

Technical director Hans van Breukelen told the Telegraaf that the KNVB and the former international failed to reach a deal because Gullit had demanded several additional clauses in his contract, including the right to quit if a better job came along.

Gullit said, however, that he only wanted the same contract as that held by Dick Advocaat, who left the job after just three friendlies to coach in Turkey.

‘I never demanded to be national coach if [Danny] Blind left as Van Breukelen is claiming,’ Gullit told the paper. ‘All I wanted on paper was that if they chose me, that we would draw up a new contract… Van Breukelen said that could be taken as read, but I wanted it to be in black and white.’

Blind, who is currently supported by Marco van Basten, declined to comment on the situation. ‘After the game with Sweden we will look for a second assistant,’ he said.

He had personally phoned Gullit about the job.
