Van Vleuten leaves hospital after Olympic crash, Van der Breggen takes gold

Olympic cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten has left hospital in Rio the day after crashing out of the women’s road race event in dramatic fashion.

Van Vleuten had broken clear of the field and seemed set for victory when she lost control on the final descent, 11 kilometres from the finish line.

Millions of viewers watched her fly over the handlebars of her bike and lying motionless in the road. Van Vleuten regained consciousness on the way to hospital and spent the night in intensive care after suffering concussion and three small fractures in her spine.

The cyclist sent a message on Twitter in the early hours of Monday to say she was ‘super disappointed’ to miss out on victory in the race, which was won by her team-mate Anna van der Breggen.

I am now in the hospital with some injuries and fractures, but will be fine. Most of all super disappointed after best race of my career.
