Three arrested after illegal fireworks found in Zeeland home

Part of the firework haul. Photo: Politie.nlThree people have been arrested in the Zeeland village of Axel after police found hundreds of kilos of illegal fireworks in a private home following a tip-off.

The arrests were made on Axel’s main square where police had been told the fireworks were being sold. The 36-year-old seller and two buyers, aged 26 and 28, were arrested.

The fireworks and a quantity of gunpowder were found at the seller’s home.

The gunpowder was detonated at a safe location close to the house after explosives experts said it was too dangerous to move far, police said in a statement.

The seller has been remanded in custody but the other two men have been released. The investigation is continuing.
