Rotterdam’s summer carnival, first held in 1984, is the 100^th tradition to be included on the Dutch cultural heritage list.

The summer carnival is of ‘great importance for cultural identity and social cohesion’ and the organisers have shown than they want to be ‘actively involved in passing this colourful heritage’ to future generations, the list compilers said.

The carnival takes place on the last weekend of July. The highlight is the Saturday street parade which attracts hundreds of thousands of people.

The cultural heritage centre was set up by the education and culture ministry to record the Netherlands ‘immaterial’ cultural heritage – such as rituals and traditions.

The Zundert Bloemencorso flower parade, the Boxmeerse Vaart procession, the slow gliding style of Dutch skating and the Sint Maarten celebrations in Utrecht are already included in the list.
