A man carrying a baby has jumped to his death from an apartment in the Eendrachtstraat in Amsterdam, close to the RAI exhibition centre. The baby was also killed in the fall.

The incident happened shortly after midday. The street was closed off and nearby flats evacuated because of fears there could be a hand grenade in the property. Police explosives experts were at the scene.

An eyewitness told the Parool the man jumped from the second floor and did not die on impact. A relative then left the building and started shouting at him as he lay on the ground, the eyewitness said.

A friend of the baby’s mother said the couple had broken up three months ago. The baby would have turned one next month.
