The Dutch women’s 4x100m relay team took gold at the European athletics championships in Amsterdam on Sunday.

Jamile Samuel, Dafne Schippers, Tessa van Schagen and Naomi Sedney completed the distance in 42.02, setting a new Dutch record record and beating title holders’ Britain into the silver position. The bronze went to Germany.

There was disappointment however, for 1,500m defending champion Sifan Hassan who was beaten into second place by Angelika Cichocka of Poland.

Hassan, who had been out of competition injured for three months said after the race she was happy with silver. ‘I’m not yet fresh, I still don’t have any speed,’ she told broadcaster NOS.

On Saturday evening Anouk Vetter took gold in the heptathlon, beating two times defending champion Antoinette Nana Djimou of France into second place.

The Netherlands finished overall in fifth place with four gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Poland topped the medals table, followed by Germany, Britain and Turkey.
