The temperature is set to top 30 degrees nationwide on Wednesday, apart from on the Wadden Sea islands, weather bureaus say.

In the south east of the country the temperature will reach as high as 35 degrees, making it the third official ‘tropical’ day there in a row, the KNMI said.

However, the day is likely to end with thunderstorms over much of the country and cloud will begin to gather in the afternoon. On Thursday, the temperature will drop to a more usual 22 degrees on the coast, reaching up to 28 degrees inland.

The Red Cross is again out in force on Wednesday to pass on tips to walkers taking part in the Nijmegen Vierdaagse four day marches.

Several dozen competitors were taken ill because of the weather on Tuesday, the organisers told website Nu.nl. Some 1,200 people have now dropped out.

On Tuesday the public health institute RIVM issued a warning to people in the southern provinces of Gelderland, Overijssel, Noord-Brabant and Limburg, urging them to take proper care of themselves in the heat.
