Time runs out for the 100 guilder note featuring Michiel de Ruyter

100 guilder noteMonday is the last day that 100 guilder notes featuring seafarer Michiel de Ruyter can be exchanged for euros at the Dutch central bank.

The note was taken out of circulation 30 years ago, well before the introduction of the euro, and will cease to be legal tender on July 26. It was replaced by a more modern design featuring a snipe.

The next guilder note to be eliminated is the five guilder note featuring the poet Vondel which will lose its value in 2025. The rest will go in 2032, 30 years after the introduction of the euro.

According to the Dutch central bank, there are still some 26 million guilder notes in the Netherlands, equivalent in value to €459m. Last year, just 137,000 were exchanged for euros.
