The Dutch consumers authority ACM wants to carry out the investigation into the impact of the merger of telecoms companies Ziggo and Vodafone Nederland on consumer choice.

The ACM has made a formal request to the European Commission to be able to carry out the research rather than Brussels. The planned merger has been reported to the commission because both companies have large turnovers and are part of cross border operations.

Vodafone and Liberty Global, which owns Ziggo, said in February that they wanted to merger their Dutch operations to create a powerful competitor for KPN.

Ziggo was taken over by Liberty Global in 2014 which merged it with its cable arm UPC Nederland.

The commission will decide by August who should carry out the investigation, the ACM said.
