Kiki Bertens failed to beat world number one Serena Williams in the semi-final of the Roland Garros tournament in Paris on Friday afternoon.

Williams, who is defending champion, beat the Dutch woman 7-6, 6-4 after Bertens failed to capitalise on two set points in the first set.

‘I had chances but I failed to take them,’ Bertens told broadcaster NOS after the game. ‘I was so close, and at times I was ahead… but alas, it was not enough.’

Bertens, who knocked out five seeded players on her way to the semi-final, was the first Dutch woman to reach the penultimate match in the Paris tournament in 45 years.

Williams will meet Garbiñe Muguruza in the final.
