Fewer cafes and bars fined for breaking smoking ban
Food safety and hygiene inspectors handed out 1,368 fines to bars, cafes and restaurants which broke the ban on smoking last year.
This is down just over 200 on 2014, the NVWA figures show. However, there was a rise in the number of written warnings, which totalled 809 last year, news website nu.nl reported.
The inspectors levied fines totalling €1.2m.
The worst offender was the staunchly religious fishing village of Urk where one-third of the cafes and bars inspected were found to be breaking the law.
Most fines – 156 – were handed out in Amsterdam, followed by Rotterdam (145) and The Hague (114).
