As many as 20 show cats have died in a house fire which broke out in Zeist early on Monday morning.

The alarm was raised at around 6am, local news station RTV Utrecht reported.

Firefighters managed to rescue one cat but between 10 and 20 others are feared to have perished.

The semi-detached house on Minckelerslaan was completely burned out by the blaze. The householder managed to get out safely before fire crews arrived and was taken to hospital to be treated for breathing problems.

Two neighbouring houses were also damaged in the fire. The cause is not yet known.
