School leaving exams start; 210,000 pupils under pressure

A student trying to cheat on the examsSome 210,000 secondary school pupils start their written final exams this week, a slight increase on 2015.

Pupils in pre-college and pre-university streams (havo and vwo) kick off with physics and Dutch respectively on Thursday. Written exams for trade school pupils (vmbo) start on Friday.

The exams take place until May 27 and the results will be published on June 16. As it does every year, the student union Laks has opened its exam complaints hotline.

The number of Dutch pupils applying for university places has risen 6% this year to 53,000.
