Frank de Boer stands down at Ajax after league title failure
Ajax trainer Frank de Boer is standing down as coach following a disappointing season, the club confirmed on Thursday.
The Amsterdam club lost the league title to PSV for the second year in a a row after failing to beat De Graafschap, the team which ended second bottom of the league.
De Boer has been at the helm at Ajax since 2010 and has one more year of his contract to run. According to the Telegraaf, he took his decision to stand down before the crucial De Graafschap tie.
Ajax won the Eredivisie under De Boer in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014, and was a finalist in the Dutch cup in 2011 and 2015.
Time for change
‘I began to realise that it was time for something else,’ De Boer said in a statement on the club’s website. ‘That is better for me and, I think, also for the club.’
De Boer said he has no plans on what to do next, but that a year without a club was also an option.
The Telegraaf says Peter Bosz, currently coach at Maccabi Tel Aviv, is top of Ajax’s list of potential replacements.
