Fewer anti-semitic incidents recorded last year in the Netherlands

The number of anti-semitic incidents reported to the Israel information centre CIDI fell by over a quarter last year to 126. In 2014, CIDI registered 171 incidents, and in 2013, just 100.

Despite last year’s fall, CIDI says it is concerned by the steady increase in incidents at schools. Last year, it received 16 reports of anti-semitism at all levels of education.

‘Anti-semitic incidents endanger children in what should be a safe learning environemnt and do not bode well for the future,’ CIDI director Hanna Luden said in a statement.

The organisation also said it is concerned about anti-Jewish chanting during football matches and called on the football association to take action.

Half of the incidents took place at matches involving Amsterdam club Ajax. Ajax supporters call themselves Jews as a nickname, despite pleas by club officials to drop the tag. Opinion as to why they use the Jewish monicker is divided.
