Applications to Dutch universities for the year starting in September have risen by 11%, according to new figures from the VSNU higher education body.

More than 73,000 students registered for courses before the deadline of May 1, although some may drop out before the academic year begins.

The growth was largely driven by a massive rise in overseas students applying, up 28% to just over 20,000.

Dutch applications also rose by 6%, to almost 53,500.
