Another prisoner has committed suicide in the Vught prison in Brabant, bringing the total number of suicides to 15 since 2011, according to local broadcaster Omroep Brabant.

The 50-year-old man, who was in custody on charges of assault, killed himself on the day he was told he would have to spend a further three months on remand, the broadcaster said.

‘He had psychiatric problems and he was not being helped,’ his lawyer told the broadcaster. He was being held in the secure psychiatric unit.

Earlier this year, another inmate died in Vught after setting his cell on fire.

The Vught prison has the largest secure unit for psychiatric patients in the country, which may explain the high suicide rate, the broadcaster said.
