There are now some 191 shops targeting tourists within the centre of Amsterdam, according to research by local broadcaster AT5.

The claim comes amid mounting concern that tourism is reaching unmanageable proportions in the inner city, driving out other businesses and making life more uncomfortable for locals. Some 17 million people are expected to visit Amsterdam this year.

AT5 said 108 of the shops targeting tourists sell souvenirs, many of which are concentrated on the Damrak from central station to the Dam. An additional 49 sell waffles and ice cream, 19 sell cheese and 18 sell tickets and bus tours. Many are operated by the same company.

Last month opposition Labour councillors said council marketing officials should stop selling Amsterdam as a party city and take action to ensure that tourism does not drive out other businesses.

The PvdA says there is a ‘real risk’ that Amsterdam will collapse under its own success and action must be taken to ensure Amsterdam does not become an ‘amusement park’ at the expense of other economic activity.

The number of ice cream and Nutella waffle shops has exploded in the city centre since they no longer require catering licences.
