Jules Schelvis, a Dutch survivor of the Sobibór Nazi death camp, died on Sunday evening at the age of 95.

The Sobibor Foundation, which he founded, announced he had passed away in his home town of Amstelveen.

He was the only one of 3,006 people transported from Westerbork concentration camp to Sobibór on June 6 1943 to survive. At least 170,000 Jewish people were murdered at the camp in occupied Poland, 34,000 of them Dutch.

Schelvis had survived time in seven Nazi camps, including Auschwitz.

After retiring, he became a Holocaust camp expert, publishing books and studies and winning an honorary doctorate from Amsterdam university. He was co-plaintiff in the trial of former Sobibór camp guard John Demjanjuk between 2009 and 2011.
