Rotterdam football club Sparta is returning to the Eredivisie after taking the Jupiler League title with a 3-1 win at home against Ajax’ second team.

With 76 points and three matches to go, Sparta has an unassailable lead in the first division.

Sparta last played top flight Dutch football six seasons ago.

Eight other Jupiler league clubs will vie for a place in the Eredivisie. So far FC Eindhoven, FC Volendam, Almere City, VVV-Venlo and NAC Breda will take part in the play-offs for promotion.

Sparta will join fellow Rotterdam club Feyenoord and possibly Excelsior in the Eredivisie. Excelsior is currently on the edge of the relegation zone.
