Half Dutch households have switched energy supplier since liberalisation

April 28, 2016

Gas flameSome 15% of Dutch households switched energy supplier last year, well above the European average of 6%, according to new figures from the consumer and markets authority ACM.

Householders who do switch can save up to €375 a year on the energy bills, the ACM said.

The Dutch energy market was liberalized in 2004 and since then half of all households have switched provider at least once. There are some 50 suppliers active on the Dutch market.

The average energy bill has been falling following the introduction of competition, the ACM said. In January this year, households could expect to pay an average of €1,661 for gas and electricity, compared with €1,739 last year and €1,782 in 2014.
