Television presenters Loretta Schrijver and Natasja Froger are among the 2,755 people awarded a decoration in king Willem-Alexander’s latest honours list on Tuesday.

The oldest recipient is 97-year-old Mrs Woeling-Rodbard from Uithoorn, who has been a volunteer for organisations such as Amnesty International and aid groups since 1965.

Most of the awards are made to people who do voluntary work but the total is lower than in recent years, Dutch media report. Just 141 awards were made to people on the basis of their paid jobs.

Rotterdam topped the list of honours with 56, followed by Amsterdam on 41. Awards are physically presented by local mayors, not the king himself.

Most people were made members of the Order of Oranje-Nassau – which has six levels. That honour was introduced in 1892 for foreigners and the ‘lower classes’. The first Dutch honour was introduced by king Willem 1 in 1815.
