Strong winds disrupt Easter events; flights and ferries delayed

The stormy weather over the Netherlands has led to the cancellation of several Easter Monday events and delays to ferry services and some flights.

The annual Easter party has been cancelled at the Soestdijk palace near Hilversum and a number of other Easter markets have been scrapped. The Easter lunch scheduled for Pampus island was called off because of the strong winds.

Fast ferry services to the Wadden Sea islands of Vlieland and Terschelling have been cancelled and holidaymakers warned they face long delays to get home. Some flights have also been delayed at Schiphol airport, news agency ANP said.

On the roads, falling trees have caused some problems and there were tailbacks on the A58 after a caravan blew over.

The strong winds, up to 100 kph along the coast, will die down in the afternoon, weather bureau KNMI said.
