An 18-year-old from Rotterdam behind the wheel of a 10 year old Mazda is a statistical time bomb and should be avoided on the road, if new research by Generali insurance is to be believed.

The Generali survey shows Mazda drivers are the worst in the Netherlands, and are 20% more likely to damage their cars than the average driver. Mazda drivers came in last place in the company’s survey for the second year in a row.

By contrast, a 65-year-old Frisian in a brand new Citroen should be a model motorist. Citroen drivers are the safest on the roads, and are 21% less likely to be involved in accidents, Generali said.

Other factors

As well as ranking the Netherlands’ best drivers by the brand of their car, Generali also published data based on vehicle age, and driver age and location.

Drivers from Friesland and the other northern provinces of Groningen and Drenthe are all less likely to be involved in accidents, and drivers aged between 55 and 65 have significantly fewer accidents than younger drivers.

Vehicle age is a factor, too. Cars less than one year old are 46% less likely to be damaged than average, while cars older than 10 years are 8% more likely.
