Dutch police have a backlog of some 1,500 cold cases – murders and other serious crimes which have gone unsolved – the Telegraaf says on Tuesday.

The figures are based on reports from all the cold case teams around the country. It is the first time such a list has been compiled since 2000, the paper notes.

Among the more notorious crimes on the list is the attack on drugs baron Johan V, who lost a leg when a bomb in his car blew up on the A28 motorway in 2000.

On Monday, the Telegraaf revealed that a new investigation has begun into the identity of a young girl found dead in a car park in 1976. Police hope DNA checks in the Netherlands and Germany may lead to her killer being found.
