Consumer confidence continues to fall in the Netherlands

Photo: Depositphotos.comConsumer confidence in the Netherlands fell by 5 points in February, reaching its lowest point in almost a year, according to the national statistics office CBS.

While February’s index score of -1 is the first negative score since February 2015, it is still above average for the last 20 years.

Consumer confidence measures consumers’ willingness to spend money and their optimism or pessimism in the economy in general.

The Netherlands experienced its highest level of consumer confidence in April 2000 (27%), and its lowest in February 2013 (-44%).

Since the economic downturn of 2008, consumer confidence plummeted across the entire eurozone. Since then, recovery has been disproportionate across Europe. The Netherlands has experienced an upward trend since 2013, while debt-stricken Greece struggled from -75% to -63% in the same period.
