Cash & carry group Makro to cut 600 jobs, reduce product range

Photo: Makro.nlThe Dutch arm of cash & carry company Makro is slashing 600 jobs and halving its product range from 65,000 to 32,000 items, the Financieele Dagblad says on Thursday.

Makro, which has 17 outlets in the Netherlands, is part of the German Metro group which also owns household electronics group Media Markt.

Makro has some 4,000 staff in the Netherlands, the FD says. Makro stores are not open to the general public and companies have to register to shop there.

Makro Nederland chief executive Kef van Helbergen told the paper the company is still profitable ‘but not enough’.

The company intends to refocus on products related to the food industry, such as plates, coffee machines and coffee beans. Staples will remain items like washing powder and toilet paper but will also include seasonal products and temporary lines, Van Helbergen said.

More shops within shops are another option, he said.
