One million Dutch people felt depressed in one year

Teenager depressed sitting inside a dirty tunnelOne in 12 people in the Netherlands say they suffered from depression in the past year, the national statistics office CBS said on Monday.

Women are more likely to feel depressed than men and depression is most common in middle age. Women are also twice as likely to be prescribed anti-depressants, earlier research by the CBS showed.

The figures, which equate to more than one million people over the age of 12, date from 2014 and focus on people’s perception of their illnesses rather than confirmed diagnoses.
