early springThe temperature could reach an unseasonably warm 16 degrees later this week, according to RTL’s weather report.

Heavy rain is forecast for Wednesday but that will be followed by warm air from the south, taking the temperature to record levels for mid-December, RTL said. The warmest December 17 on record was in 1989, when the temperature reached 13.5 degrees at the De Bilt weather station near Hilversum.

The KNMI weather bureau is less optimistic than RTL but still forecasts temperatures of up to 14 degrees later in the week.

The chances of a white Christmas are also minimal, weather forecasters say. According to the KNMI, it is likely to remain mild with wind and rain up to the end of the month.

The warmest December day on record is 15.3 degrees, recorded on December 24 1977.
