PSV Eindhoven became the first Dutch football club in nine years to progress to the knock-out stage of the Champions League, following a 2-1 home win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night.

Goals from skipper Luuk de Jong and Davy Pröpper overturned a one-goal deficit after the Russians scored from a penalty with just 14 minutes still to play.

The PSV victory pushed Manchester United, who lost 4-2 to Germany’s Wolfsburg, into third place and the Europa League.

After the match, PSV coach Philip Cocu said he is proud of his players. ‘We believed in it and we were going for the win,’ he told the Uefa website. ‘Of course it wasn’t easy. You need faith, belief and confidence. I prefer to play our own way but sometimes you need to make a small change. The result is what counts.’

De Jong, who received his fourth yellow card of the tournament with a protest over the CSKA penalty, will be suspended for the first knock-out match.

‘I’m really fed up about it because I did not say that much, just that he lay down rather quickly,’ De Jong told reporters afterwards. ‘I wish I had known about it before. I would have kept my mouth shut.’
