Truffle pasta with 0.0006% truffle nominated for food con of the year

December 8, 2015

Liga milk and strawberryAldi’s ‘richly filled” truffle pasta containing 0.0006% truffle and orange juice that has been made less sweet by adding water are just two of this year’s nominations for misleading food product of the year.

The public vote is organised by Foodwatch, which campaigns against the use of words such as ‘crafted, pure, authentic and fair’ in food labelling and says neither the advertising standards agency nor government inpectors take the issue seriously.

‘This public prize is a plea to give more power to the consumers who have bought a lot of hot air from supermarkets,’ Foodwatch’s Sjoerd van de Wouw told the Volkskrant on Tuesday.

Other items on the list include Plus supermarket’s ‘light’ peanut butter which compensates for a 30% reduction in fat by a 451% increase in sugar. Liga milk and strawberry biscuits contain just 0.03% strawberry powder and Rude Health almond drink has the equivalent of just two nuts in a 200 ml glass.

Albert Heijn has two nominations. The ‘superfood’ dried cranberries it sells are 68% pineapple syrup and so contain much more sugar as they should. And the mini butter almond pastry is also on the list because it is just half the size of the packaging.
