With just three days to go before the end of the year, December 2015 will go down in the history books as the first with no frost since official records began in 1901, weather website Weeronline said on Tuesday.

The average temperature so far – 9.7 degrees – is also the warmest ever record in December, the website said. The previous record – 7.3 degrees – dates from 1974. The figures are based on the temperatures recorded at the De Bilt weather station near Hilversum.

The unseasonable mild weather is set to change in the first few days of January, when frost and snow are likely in several parts of the country, the website said.

According to weather bureau KNMI, New Year’s Eve is set to be overcast with showers, although there will be some sun on New Year’s Day.

The coldest day this year was January 23, when it reached -8.8 degrees at the seaside resort of Wijk aan Zee. The warmest was in Maastricht on July 2, when it hit 38.2 degrees.
