Nearly 21,000 people fined for not showing ID

Two Dutch passportDutch officials handed out nearly 21,000 fines to people for failing to carry or refusing to show some form of ID last year, website Nu.nl says on Friday.

The fine for failure to show ID is €45 for people aged 14 to 17 and €90 for adults. Everyone in the Netherlands has been required by law to carry valid ID since 2005.

Nine out of 10 fines were issued by police, while public transport staff and local council officials accounted for most of the rest.

Proportionally most fines were issued in Rotterdam and The Hague. People aged 18 to 30 were 4.5 times more likely to be fined for not having ID as older adults.
