Using an airboard, a sort of mini self-balancing scooter, is illegal on Dutch public roads, cycle paths and pavements, the infrastructure ministry has told broadcaster Nos.

Airboards, also known as hoverboards or mini-segways, have a small motor to move around and are currently on sale in the Netherlands for around €500.

‘These are motorised two-wheelers, and should have the same European certification as a light moped,’ a ministry spokesman said. ‘But they don’t have a seat so there is no question of them qualifying, unless they do it as a special type.’

The segway is classed as a special type of moped and is allowed on the roads.
