2015 has been both sunnier and wetter than average and is one of the warmest years since official records began in 1906, weather bureau weeronline.nl said on Thursday.

In total, the sun shone for an average 1,888 hours compared with 1,639 hours in a ‘normal’ year. Vlissingen, in Zeeland, was the best place for sunshine with over 2,000 hours so far this year.

The average temperature so far has been 10.9 degrees, well above the 10.2 degrees in a ‘normal’ year. In particular, the heatwave at the beginning of July and the warm weather in November and December had a impact, weeronline.nl said.

2015 was also wet with over 950 mm of rain falling over the year, just over 100 mm more than the average. The last time there was so much rain was in 2001.

The KNMI weather bureau says the mild weather, with some sunshine and some showers, is set to continue into 2016. The chance of a shift to colder, more wintry weather, is less than 10% the KNMI says.
