Personal property storm damage to reach at least €5m

wind damageTuesday night’s storm caused an estimated €5m worth of damage to homes and other personal property, broadcaster Nos said on Thursday.

However, the amount is expected to rise as further claims are received by insurance companies, the broadcaster said.

The initial estimate is based on a ‘storm model’ in which wind speed is compared with historical damage data. Damage to vehicles, agriculture and government property is not included.

The association of insurers said Tuesday night’s storm was not exceptional. ‘It was a serious autumn storm but not that special,’ according to the association’s Rudi Buis.

Insurers are faced with an annual €50m in damage to homes and personal property, divided between three to five storms.
