Dutch cities are getting safer, Amsterdam is still crime capital

Dutch police officerThe likelihood of being the victim of crime in a Dutch city is now almost as low as in rural areas and people actually feel safer as well, the national statistics office CBS said on Friday.

The number of recorded crimes fell by 23% between 2006 and 2014, particularly in the Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague regions. The crime rate in these areas is now around 20%, similar to that in more sparsely populated areas such as Zeeland, the CBS said.

People are still most likely to be the victim of a crime in Amsterdam. In 2014, almost three in 10 people were affected by crime, but this is down from over four in 10 in 2006.
