Brabant town council says no to asylum seeker centre plans

Akcakale - border gate refugeesThe Brabant town of Steenbergen, at the centre of angry protests by anti-refugee activists last month, will not get an asylum seekers centre after all.

The town council on Wednesday voted against plans to develop a refugee centre for 300 people but did agree to house 100 recognised refugees with residency permits for a maximum of six months.

The town has seen several bad-tempered protest meetings about the council’s plans and police were forced to intervene on one occasion. In October, some 600 people at one meeting shouted down the town’s mayor and one woman who supported the idea.
