A record 90,000 foreign students are studying in the Netherlands

Almost 90,000 foreign students are studying in the Netherlands this year, of whom 23,000 come from outside Europe, according to international education body EP-Nuffic.

This means a record 10% of the Dutch student body come from abroad, the organisation said. In particular, the increase in the number of English language degree courses, the open Dutch society and high standards are a draw, EP-Nuffic said.

Freddy Weima, director of EP-Nuffic, said in a statement that foreign students are good for the Dutch economy, particularly if they remain in the Netherlands after graduating. In addition, they form good ambassadors for the Netherlands if they move on or return home, he said.

Monday marks the start of the Week of the International Student.
