Vespa scooter on display at EICMA 2014 in Milan, Italy Vespa scooters are a particular favourite with thieves in Amsterdam, the Parool says on Tuesday after questioning the five biggest insurance companies.

One insurance company told the paper that 95% of Vespa mopeds will be stolen within five years. ‘Vespas and Amsterdam are not a happy marriage,’ said another. Piaggios are also popular with thieves, the paper says.

In the Netherlands as a whole, just 4% of Vespas are stolen within five years, according to figures from the national vehicle crime registry.

In the first half of this year, 2,100 mopeds were stolen in the Amsterdam area, over three times as many as in Rotterdam.
