Quake damage reports are of cracks in walls and plaster

groningen earthquake damageThere have been around 170 damage reports so far following Wednesday evening’s earthquake in Groningen.

The reports come from the village of Hellum, the epicentre of the earthquake, and from nearby places such as Slochteren and Winschoten.

Most of them concern cracks in walls and in plasterwork. No buildings collapsed, the police say.

The earthquake measured  3.1 on the Richter scale,  and its epicentre was some 20 kilometres east of the city of Groningen.
The quakes are caused by the ground settling following the extraction of natural gas from under the province. The government has been forced to cut back production because of the quakes, which have damaged thousands of homes.
