More restaurants were judged unhygenic last year

Food safety inspectors handed out nearly 12% more fines and warnings to dirty cafes and restaurants last year, compared with 2013.

The figures from the food safety board NVWA were obtained by news website Nu.nl.

Last year, 13,619 cafes and restaurants were checked by inspectors and 9,177 were either fined or given a warning because of unhygenic conditions, nu.nl reports.

This compares with 11,690 and 8,212 respectively in 2013.

The NVWA was able to inspect 2,000 more businesses last year because checks are being based more on previous inspection results and reports by clients.
