Interactive documentary Refugee Republic wins top Dutch design award
The Dutch Design Week award for both the best communication project and the Future Award went to Refugee Republic, an interactive online documentary by web documentary and comic maker Submarine Channel.
Refugee Republic maps the lives of 58,000 people living in the Domiz refugee camp in northern Iraq. The piece uses film, illustrations, music and interviews to highlight the issues with what Wallpaper magazine said was a ‘light, non-judgmental tone’.
Despite its ‘heavy’ subject matter, Refugee Republic is a heart-warming plea for compassion, the judges said in their review. ‘In a time when nuances can easily be overlooked, it is refreshing to see refugees portrayed not as victims but as human beings, which encourages us to relate to their experiences.’
The Young Designer prize went to Teresa van Dongen, whose work merges aesthetics and science, such as bio-luminescence to produce lamps. Van Dongen graduated from Eindhoven’s design academy just one year ago.
