Gritty Limburg drama Gluckauf takes best film Golden Calf

Georgina VerbaanGeorgina Verbaan won her second Golden Calf as best Dutch actress at the annual Dutch film awards on Friday evening.

This time Verbaan took the top Dutch film award for her role in the romantic comedy De Surprise. The film, about an unhappy multi-millionaire,  was directed by Mike van Diem who earlier won an Oscar for Karakter.

Gluckauf, a father and son drama set in poverty-stricken Limburg, won four Golden Calfs. The film, set against a backdrop of mine closures, took the awards for best film, direction, screenplay and camera work.

Three of the four acting awards went to the biographical film about Dutch singer André Hazes. Martijn Fischer won the best male role award for his portrayal of Hazes in Bloed, Zweet en Tranen. Hadewych Minis won the best supporting actress award for her role as his wife Rachel and Raymond Thiry took best supporting actor for playing his father.

The public’s prize went to De Club van Sinterklaas & het Pratende Paard, the third in a series of children’s films about Sinterklaas.
