The burst water main which led to the VU university teaching hospital being evacuated earlier this month caused damage put at over €50m, the hospital’s chairman Wouter Bos said on Wednesday.

The hospital was reopened on Wednesday, two weeks after it was closed down when a water main ruptured, causing major flooding in the area of the university. Almost 400 patients had to be moved to new locations.

Bos said some technical equipment, including the main boiler which supplied all the hospital’s water, need to be replaced. The hospital is currently using emergency generators and water supplies.

It is not yet clear who will be responsible for picking up the bill for the damage, news agency ANP says. The water main is owned by the Amsterdam water board Waternet.
