Operations resume at flooded Amsterdam hospital

ambulances outside the VUmcOperations are due to resume on Tuesday at the VU teaching hospital which was evacuated two weeks ago following serious flooding caused by a burst water main.

The hospital is expected to be open to all-comers on Wednesday.

The flooding occurred on September 8, affecting the hospital’s boiler room and water supplies. Some parts of the complex were without electricity because of short circuits and the lifts had to be operated manually.

The flooding also affected several laboratories and the hospital morgue.

All the bedridden patients were transferred to other hospitals, and some of the 339 patients were discharged early. Fifty of the patients will be returned to the VU later this week.

The damage to the VU is expected to reach tens of millions of euros, according to its director, Wouter Bos.
