Dutch Muslim convert released from jail pending terror case verdict

September 21, 2015

court justice hammerOne of 10 defendants in a major terrorism trial in Amsterdam has been released from custody.

Rudolph H, a Muslim convert, has been held at a very high security prison for over a year but will now wait for the verdict a free man. He has been ordered to hand over his passport and not to take part in demonstrations.

Freeing H from jail, judges said his role in the alleged terrorist group was ‘less prominent’ than claimed by the prosecution department.

‘The judge also took his personal situation into account,’ said Volkskrant reporter Janny Groen. ‘He has a child and is studying.’

In total, nine men and one woman are suspected of being members of a terrorist organisation. Several face charges of preparing to commit terrorist attacks and others have been charged with recruitment. Three of the defendants are thought to be in Syria or Iraq and one may have been killed.

H, together with Azzedine C and 19-year-old Erasmus University drop-out Oussama C are said to be among the most prominent Muslim radicals in The Hague’s Schilderswijk district. H also ran a website named de Ware Religie (the true religion) which has since been taken down.

The court is due to publish its verdict on December 3.
