Budget cuts at the public prosecution department are being implemented too fast and are creating risks to the daily work, according to a new report.

The report has been requested by parliament several times and was finally released by justice minister Ard van der Steur on budget day, broadcaster RTL news reported.

In the report, the researchers say that the budget cuts are ‘irresponsible’ and must be made more slowly. If the cuts are pushed through, the public prosecution department will lose out on quality and innovation, the researchers say.

The public prosecution department will get extra money for tackling terrorism and for training young lawyers, but the researchers say this is not enough. In total, the department is expected to save €143m by 2018.

The researchers advise Van der Steur to slow down the cuts, which will cost an extra €50m between 2016 and 2018. The minister has yet to decide if he will make the extra money available, according to RTL.
