Angolan teens’ father may stay temporarily

GlaucioThe father of Angolan teens Gláucio (13) and Márcia (18) was on Monday given temporary leave to stay in the Netherlands.

The man, who used to be a soldier in the Angolan army, is considered a potential war criminal and is ineligible for refugee status.

He agreed to leave the country so that his wife and children could be given a residence permit after the children’s ombudsman condemned the decision to deport the children as ‘unacceptable’.

The father was due to be deported three weeks ago, but his lawyer appealed the ruling on the grounds that the man is undergoing medical treatment.

The justice ministry has now told the lawyer the man may stay in the Netherlands while he is being treated.

The lawyer could not say how long the treatment will last.
