More people lose money in online shopping scams

Online ShoppingAlmost half a million people in the Netherlands were victims of an online shopping con last year, according to new figures published by national statistics office CBS.

In total, 3.3% of the population were scammed last year, compared with 2.7% in 2013, the CBS said. This is a rise of almost 90,000 cases over the year.

The increase is not just due to the rise in online shopping. People who have been buying goods and services via the internet for years are also falling prey to con men.

However, there has been a reduction in other forms of internet fraud, the CBS said. Fewer email accounts are being hacked and changes to bank card security have reduced the number of skimming cases.
